ABOUT US

The benefit our project will have on the community is expose students to different career paths they have not considered before. We will collaborate with professionals in the following fields which are providers, policy, public health, nutrition, administration and educators. The Pre-Professionals come to campus knowing that they have an interest in health but are unsure what major to declare. This website is intended to help the students narrow down their interests by reading the interviews and possibly see some similarities between them and the people interviewed. This may be more accessible to students because it may be a resource easier to access.

Students can get information from a primary source if they are interested in the field especially because the website includes all the fields in one place whereas the class that pre-professionals take, students take notes on their career interest and depend on one source only. Students may be able to seek out internship opportunities in this area and may increase their network. Being that our project is targeted towards the Pre-Pros, we hope to work with Christina Moylan since she is the chair of the Pre-Pro program and Career Services to contact alumni.

Julie Chan - website development and research

Hello!  My name is Julie Chan, and I am a Health Sciences major with a concentration in Nutrition.  I thought that this website would be helpful because for the majority of my time in college, I have had many interests for potential career paths, and a guide like this would have been extremely helpful.  I chose my roles for this project with the hopes of exploring my interest in web development develop my researching skills.  As for my future career plans, although I’m still not sure what I want to pursue, I have found a passion in helping vulnerable populations.  I plan on moving to San Francisco after graduation to continue exploring different health fields.

Clarissa Guzman - communications and interviews

My name is Clarissa Guzman and I am a senior Public & Community Health major. This project is something I think is essential for first year students - specifically exploratory and pre-professional students. As someone who was an exploratory student, I struggled to declare a major. I knew I wanted a major in the declare field, but didn’t know much of the majors offered at IC. I hope this website is helpful and can give you great insight on the majors and activities IC offers as well as career paths you may follow. After graduation, I will be attending State University of New York at Albany to pursue my Masters of Public Health in Social Behavior and Community Health.

PROJECT MEMBERS

Brooke Kacala - communications and interviews

Welcome to our site! I am Brooke, a Public and Community Health student with a concentration in Sociology here at IC! I believe that this website will be extremely useful for you in your future endeavors, especially if you are still unsure if you are interested in health. For me, I chose to work on this project, specifically the  interviewing sections, because I do believe communication is essential in developing professional leadership skills (no matter what major or field you end up in). As I continue to grow and soon graduate, I will be moving to Sierra Leone with the Peace Corps in hopes to strengthen my understanding the development, structure, and function of health in different cultures.

Christina Franqui - resources

My name is Christina Franqui and I am a Health Sciences major with a Pre-Med emphasis here at IC. I chose to work on this project because coming into IC as a Pre-Professional major myself, I often found myself struggling to decide what I wanted to major in. I think having a website like this one available to me at the time would’ve been extremely helpful, so I wanted to help bring the idea to life. After graduation, I will be attending Stony Brook University to pursue a Masters of Science degree in Biomedical Sciences in hopes of applying to medical school upon completion.
